Letter to Familes from Josh

October 3, 2019

Dear Ella Baker Community,

During indoor recess on Thursday a group of students asked Jackie to help them find a quiet corner and a timer so they could log some minutes for the Read-a-Thon. The Ella Baker Read-a-Thon has been a true success: thousands of minutes logged and students and families engrossed in stories. I encourage you all to continue to find those minutes throughout the year, whether it is building a time during your evening routines when everyone reads, or pulling out your books on the subway or waiting in line at the pharmacy. These precious moments are just waiting for us to laugh at the new Fly Guy book or learn about courageous activist such as Greta Thunberg. Keep it up and share the places that you find time to read.

Next week, our grade 7/8 humanities teacher, Nina Ciatto, will be presenting at the International Literacy Association in New Orleans, She will be sharing her research on best practices in teaching reading. Her presentation is titled Poems & Small Groups, Improving Reading with Student Engagement, Without Teacher Stress. Through the years, Nina’s effective work in literacy has been evident in presentations of student work, eloquence in student voice as they’ve shared original poems and arguments, as well as school and state data. This will be the 2nd conference where NIna will be discussing her powerful and authentic work. We are proud to have Nina on our staff and wish her continued success.

Also coming up is our 1st Ella Baker Maker Fair. This is building up to be an amazing event. We are planning a variety of activities and challenges, from designing contraptions that zing through the air to creating a huge dome where participants will eventually be able to walk through. There will also be a bake sale and raffle to help raise money for a variety of programs at school. We are still in need of volunteers for the event. Please use the Sign-up Genius to find a slot to volunteer.

Honored,

Joshua Satin

Principal
