"Give light and people will find the way" - Ella Baker

 Welcome from the PTA

If your child is a student at our school, then you are automatically a member of the PTA.

The mission of the Ella Baker School PTA, in partnership with teachers and school administration, is to ensure our students learn through a social justice lens, and that they and their families have the community support they need to thrive. We are a multiracial community committed to using a decolonized, antiracist, equity-focused lens which will guide and align our work via our PTA committees, educational/extracurricular programming, and fundraising efforts. We support the school’s social-emotional and academic curriculum through professional development opportunities for teachers and providing additional resources that promote social justice. It is through collaboration among our community that we will live into this mission.

Our school community has come together in extraordinary ways in 2020 to meet this difficult moment. As a citywide school, we are uniquely affected by the pandemic and challenges facing the coming school year. Our 360 students come from all five boroughs. Yet we have convened over Zoom for PTA meetings, meetups for caregivers, and conversations on race and talking with our kids about race. We have WhatsApp groups for each class which have been wonderful opportunities for families to connect and find support, and exchange valuable information about current affairs, books, media, and events that align with our mission. Parents and caregivers of Ella Baker School students can join any of our PTA sub-committees: Family Equity, STEAM, Green, and Grants.

In the past, we have funded field trips to various museums and cultural institutions, ice skating for the entire school at City Ice Pavilion, S’Cool Sounds recorder program, swimming at Asphalt Green, Manice Environmental Science program, the 8th grade graduation ceremony and luncheon, the teacher and staff appreciation lunch, and professional development for EBS teachers. Our annual winter potluck in December has been our biggest fundraiser, followed by the Read-A-Thon, raffles, online auction, and bake sales.

During the 2020 -- 2021 school year we envision PTA funds meeting the emergent needs of our families as well as continuing to support professional development opportunities for staff. When school closed in the spring, we funded jet packs for families without access to wifi. Our community contributed to an emergency fund for families. We will continue to host virtual workshops with expert speakers centering social justice work with conversations on racial equity, SOGIE, disability rights, and more. While we commit to this work year-round, we are also planning virtual events for Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month, Indigenous People’s Day, Black Lives Matter Week of Action at School, National Arab American Heritage Month, Earth Day, AAPI Heritage Month, and PRIDE.

We will get through this together! In the meantime, welcome and we look forward to “meeting” and working with you.

With appreciation,
